In 1841, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote about “the law of compensation,” exemplifying it with “POLARITY, or action and reaction, we meet in every part of nature; in darkness and light; in heat and cold; in the ebb and flow of waters…”
For most of my life, I’ve lived by these principles. It’s the idea that we must courageously jump into every challenge with purpose, instead of simply trying to avoid suffering. Not only that, but we can choose the pain we suffer; otherwise we will have it chosen for us by the Universe.
Death is a given; we must not fear it. Pain is a given; we must not run away from it. We do what we have to do.
For this project, I want to explore these concepts more fully, as well as adjacent ideas such as the pendulum effect, the law of averages, equilibrium, and Stoicism.
