I get story ideas all the time, but I don’t always have time to flesh them out. Whenever I get an idea for a short story, I type up a quick synopsis and file it away. So far, I’ve accumulated over fifty story ideas.
Sometimes I do have some time to flesh out one of my story ideas. You can find these stories in the short story section in Steve’s Notebook.
For this project, I’d like to dedicate time to developing each of my short story ideas for publication. These days with the help of AI tools, this is becoming more feasible. For instance, this morning I took one of my least developed ideas and with the help of AI*, was able to write out the story and publish it on my blog in a matter of a few hours. The story is called The Final Fortune, and it is in flash fiction format (it’s a little over 1,000 words).
* You might be thinking that I’m just generating and publishing AI slop. However, I think of AI more as a tool for helping you get work done, just like Microsoft Word and Grammarly are just writing tools. To write The Final Fortune, I gave the AI specific instructions on the premise, setting, and type of story I wanted. I had it generate three draft stories, while tweaking the prompts between each one. Then I read through the best draft, edited sentences I didn’t think sounded right, removed portions I thought were confusing or irrelevant, and added my own sentences for clarification. I hated the ending the AI came up with, so I deleted the last five paragraphs and wrote the ending myself.
