Your brain is faster than any computer out there. Your desktop computer only seems faster because it processes one task at a time. But your brain has to handle thousands of jobs at a time. At the basic level, it needs to regulate breathing, blood flow, and your nervous system. It also needs to process your senses, make decisions, and control your body. And on top of that, it needs to remember things, learn and think. It does all this and more, all at the same time.
Like in a computer, one way to make your brain work faster is to reduce the number of tasks it has to do. If your computer has too much junk software running on it, it will run slow. Your brain works the same way. To make it run faster, you need to clean out the junk.
Write everything down
One way to remove the junk from your head is to write everything down. If you don’t write each thought down, you will have to remember it. Remembering things takes a lot of brain power. Just think of the last time you had to take a test. Tests are hard because you need to remember a lot of things to do well on them. Writing something down means you don’t have to remember it anymore.
Replace your memory
You can still forget things even if you write them down. You need cues, so you don’t forget to check your notes. They are reminders you set to jog your memory. They are things like the timer you set, so you don’t forget to take the casserole out of the oven. Another cue can be the desk calendar you review every morning when you get into work. Or you can put something out of place, so you remember it, like hanging your jacket on the front doorknob.
Don’t input junk
Many people have a habit of watching trashy TV, reading junk news or gossiping. Doing these things puts a lot of junk in your head. Then you will go through the day wasting brain power thinking of all the garbage you watched. You don’t need TV, news, and gossip to be happy in your life. Taking in information that doesn’t affect you in any way will slow down your brain. Try going without unnecessary media for a week. You will find your life much more productive.
