Random encounters are like spices in the stew of roleplaying games. Add too many and you get a chaotic mess of a game that leaves a bitter taste in the players’ mouths. Too few, and your game might seem a bit bland and staged.
It’s not just about quantity either. Many Dungeon Masters (DM) make the mistake of adding generic random encounters to their games. Five skeletons attack in the night. A wyvern swoops down and attacks while the players travel. Three orcs are standing around in a dungeon corridor. When they see the players, they attack. These types of encounters are boring, pointless, and slow the game down.
I want to create an ultimate guide to creating meaningful and interesting encounters. I also want to come up with hundreds of fun and memorable encounters that any DM can easily add to their campaign.
