In the context of the game Dungeons & Dragons (DnD), an “adventure” is a pre-written, self-contained story or scenario that a Dungeon Master (DM) can run for their players. Think of it as a pre-packaged plot for a game session or a series of sessions.
There is an art to writing adventures. The writer needs to predict what the players will likely do in each presented situation. The writer also needs to balance difficulty of each dangerous encounter that occurs in the adventure so that it is not too easy or too hard. Finally, the writer needs to write with enough clarity that information that the DM needs is available at the right times when they are needed.
I’d like to analyze the best DnD adventures and figure out what makes them great, so that I may replicate the best features of a great adventure. Ideally, I can systemize the adventure creation process to find a foolproof method to write great adventures.
