I have an estimated 30,000 baseball cards. Most of these came as a result of my “25 Years of Baseball” project back in 2008, where I bought unopened hobby boxes of Topps baseball cards from the years 1984-2008, opened a random pack per day, and blogged about the contents.
Since shutting down the site to focus on life demands, I’ve pondered what to do with all of my cards. Over the years, I’ve realized that the cards I enjoy most are autograph cards. I also enjoy seeing the evolution of Topps baseball cards as the years go by. I enjoy the historical aspect of baseball. I also enjoy the statistical aspect of baseball.
These realizations have led me to develop a vision for what I would like my collection to look like in the future. I currently have a big card display case on my wall, where I put my most prized autographs on display. I would also like to have a big binder featuring a chronology of the greatest baseball players, depicted on Topps baseball cards.
For this project, I want to make my dream baseball card collection a reality, and also find a good way to get rid of the many baseball cards that don’t fit into this vision. Getting rid of unwanted baseball cards is the second part of this project, and it may take the form of starting an eBay store to sell the cards, giving away the cards, or even simply throwing away cards (last resort that I probably don’t have the heart to do).
I’d also like to create some sort of historical website to show off the cards that make it into my collection, and why they deserve to be in my collection. In a way, I’ll be creating my own hall of heroes, similar to the Hall of Fame museum in Cooperstown.
The website would be similar to my Heroes of Baseball website that I’ve recently shuttered and moved the contents to https://stevesnotebook.com/category/baseball/.
